Our mochi - not cut very nicely but still tasty!

-Mix until smooth.
-Pour into a greased 5 cup microwaveable tube pan.
-Cover with plastic wrap and microwave on 80% for 10 minutes, rotating several times during cooking.
-Let stand for 10 minutes.
-Pull mochi from sides and turn onto board dusted with potato starch.
-Cut into bite size pieces and dust with potato starch.

We topped one batch of our mochi with a kinako + sugar mixture.  Here is a much more appealing photo from sadacori on Flickr.

Note:  I linked some ingredients and supplies to but you can find most of what you need in a grocery store that sells Asian products.

  1. I tried making microwave mochi a couple of years ago but didn't taste very good - not sweet enough. Maybe the kinako/sugar mixture would have helped?

I do make a mean butter mochi though! DD1 has brought it to school the past 2 Girls' Days and we have quite a few fans now!

  2. DH is quite good at making it so if he can do it, you should be able to. Haven't done butter mochi - mmmm...make some for me!!!!!!
